SRLEEA STATEMENT ON CLEMENCY & PARDONS

January 22, 2025

The Small and Rural Law Enforcement Executives Association (SRLEEA) stands firmly in support of the men and women who serve our communities with dedication and courage. We echo the concerns recently expressed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) regarding decisions made by both the current and previous administrations to grant clemency or pardons to individuals convicted of violent crimes against law enforcement.

These actions send a troubling message. They devalue the service and sacrifices of law enforcement officers and their families and risk emboldening others to disregard the laws that keep our communities safe. Crimes targeting law enforcement are not just attacks on individuals; they are direct assaults on the stability and trust within our society. Allowing such offenders to avoid full accountability erodes the foundations of justice and disrespects the lives and careers of those who uphold it.

We join with the IACP and FOP in calling on policymakers and leaders to affirm that those who commit crimes against law enforcement must face the full consequences of their actions. At the same time, we must hold all violent offenders accountable—not just those who offend against law enforcement. Justice, accountability, and public safety are non-negotiable. Together, we must uphold the integrity of our justice system and ensure that it protects not only our communities but also those who serve them.

The Small and Rural Law Enforcement Executives Association remains steadfast in its commitment to advocate for and support the law enforcement agencies that protect millions of Americans every day.
